Honorable Mention Duet at Eighteen M. Kathryn Black If at first when you arrived too soon violet and wailing beneath lights that shone brighter than midday sun when they laid you brand-spanking new warm to the touch upon my bloated belly too many strangers had too many hands in and out of that flaming gash with silver clamps needles and coarse black thread I was horrified wanting to scream a duet of terror with you - body-shocked and bleeding If at first when they whisked you away the heels of primitive panic dug in and the illogical logic of denial had its way with my conscience even upon the wonderfully wicked wings of morphine and the nurses that came and went grew increasingly agitated at my despondency as we each lay in strange beds of too-crisp sheets for almost three days before I gave at last and no one I knew came to see me and no one I knew came to see you and no one knew you existed If at last I consented to see you if only to ease the agony of over-ripe breasts while I peered into the pulse of your pinched and pinklit face your fingers gripped my finger and your head wobbled in want at my already dripping nipples as your mouth filled with relief and I burst into your life as you had irreversibly burst out of mine forgive me for every moment from that moment on you have been the keeper and keepsake of my heart the single most brilliant shining creation of my life that I have ever had the pleasure of welcoming finally forever. ~*~
